Clockwork Espresso

Twitter handle:
@ClckwrkEspresso

About the business:

Clockwork Espresso is the home of PUSH – the world’s most precise coffee tamper.

Making espresso requires compressing (tamping) freshly ground coffee into a perfectly level bed of uniform density. If this is not achieved, the pressurised water finds the path of least resistance, avoiding most of the grounds, and over-extracting the rest. This results in an unpleasantly flavoured espresso.

 Tamping correctly is difficult for even the most experienced baristas and current tampers currently cause a wide range of injuries to the users – Carpal Tunnel (barista wrist), shoulder and back problems, and even wrists fractures.

PUSH changes all of this. It guarantees a perfectly level tamp, and absolute consistency from one user to the next. The world’s leading experts in Barista Ergonomics have compared PUSH to traditional tampers, and found that it significantly reduces the risk of injury.

 PUSH launched to the public on 7th April 2016. The first month saw sales of £23k to 24 countries. 6 months later, Clockwork Espresso has seen sales of £76k to 31 countries. Since launch, our entire production capacity has been sold out for several weeks.

 Earlier this year we won the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) Excellence Award for Innovation.

Caroline Davis

Business name:
Tumbles & Grumbles

Twitter handle:
@tumblesgrumbles

About the business:

Tumbles and Grumbles is a dedicated, specialised, paediatric first aid company, founded May 2015.

It is driven by both my passion and experience as a parent and a paramedic to enable all parents, grandparents and carers to have the confidence and skills to help their little ones, if ever required. In the last 18 months I have empowered more than 300 parents and am proud to have been part of the on-going campaign by UK Nurseries to attain Millie’s Mark. Understanding that fear is a factor, I decided to go back to grass roots level and wipe out that fear before it had a chance to take hold.

In April 2016 I launched “Little Rescuers” where I inspire pre-school and primary age children with the life skill of first aid and life saving knowledge through fun, play, music and team work. In Scandinavia, first aid is taught from pre-school through to high school graduation. Norway has the highest out of hospital resuscitation rate and greatest bystander intervention ratio in Europe, because people are willing and aren’t afraid to help. I want to change the way the UK views first aid and what better way than to start with our future!

Louisa Rogers

Business name:
TrendListr Ltd

Twitter handle:
@trendlistr

About the business:

The vintage industry needs an overhaul. Sellers are overworked, receive little payment, and don’t know how best to promote themselves to maximise value. Why? Because there’s no platform out there that reaches a wide enough audience without cheapening their brands. eBay screams ‘car boot sale’ while Etsy’s handmade goods are slowly being drowned out by mass produced items after their recent policy changes.

TrendListr aims to offer a platform for sellers to list their products on whilst giving them a measure of pride in what they do – and providing buyers with the ‘ASOS of vintage clothing’, an intuitive and aesthetic user experience connecting them with a global database of vintage dealers. Listings to the site will be curated to ensure quality and authenticity and make us stand out from other such selling platforms.

TrendListr – shopping second-hand shouldn’t be bland.

canny drinks ltd

Entrepreneurs name:
Liam Watson & Simon Bishop

Business name:
Canny Drinks Ltd

Twitter handle:
@wearecanny

About the business:

Canny makes all natural flavoured milk selling throughout the UK but has its base in Newcastle. We are based just across the road from the centre for to who we give 5% of everything we make.

The quick story is we are two best mates that met via linkedin and met for a beer, and continue to do so. We just make way more drinks now, than we did 10 months ago. Liam originally trained as a herbalist and manufactured herbs for the likes of Tesco and Amazon. How natural products can fuel and support the body always fascinated him. Throughout the years Liam saw a gap in the market for a 100% natural milkshake, so he brought his experience and knowledge on herbal medicine to realise the concept. Simon’s 20 years manufacturing, supply chain and development experience in the food and drink sector was just what Canny needed to take the products to market on a large scale.

We believe that great taste comes from great ingredients, by using great ingredients like Belgian Chocolate, Strawberry Puree, Vanilla Pods and Banana Puree, adding some Red Tractor certified Milk and thickening it with Corn flour (just like your Mam’s gravy), we found that they could taste great, and it wasn’t the process, it was the ingredients you needed to get right. We want to make amazing drinks and have fun on the way and guess what 5% of all our profits go to a good cause! [The other 95% is used to build a great brand, we use a little for food to keep us alive, and the odd beer.

We aren’t interested in being the biggest, we only care about being the best.

manhua cha logo manhua cha

Entrepreneurs name:
David Hall & Carine Tsow

Business name:
Manhua Cha

Twitter handle:
@manhuacha

About the business:

We are the UK’s only comic book themed catering company. We specialise in super powered bubble tea which is served from our custom built catering trailer.

Bubble tea is a Taiwanese tea based drink that is available as a fruity tea or a milky tea. In the bottom of your drink you add either juice balls (that pop in your mouth as you drink) or flavoured jellies. When you order your drink from us you ‘create a superhero’ in 3 steps:

1. Choose your super power (corresponds to a tea flavour) 2. Choose your accessory (which corresponds to the topping, i.e. juice balls or jellies) 3. Choose your cape which corresponds to a hot or cold drink. So for example, if you ordered a cold green apple fruit tea with strawberry juice balls your hero would have super strength as their power, a robotic suit as their accessory and a blue cape for a cold drink. The superpowers on our menu also tie in with characters in our self-written and self-published comic book.

We are looking to spend the first 12-18 months targeting mainly comic cons as well as food and drink events. Additionally we are currently looking into selling various components of our drinks and comic book on our online store. After this period we are looking to move into premises and plan to franchise the business. Although bubble tea has been around since the 1980’s it has only recently started to take off in different countries. It is well known in Hong Kong and various other Asian countries as well as Australia and the USA. Europe has also seen a steady increase in bubble tea shops in recent years and the drink is currently huge in London with Manchester following closely behind.
