I have a folder on our server called ‘how we do things’ which covers everything from how to make a phone call to how to take a photograph at a trade show to make sure that it isn’t blurred and unusable.

I add to it all the time and it helps to avoid any doubt – and doesn’t assume or rely on common sense.

It was a painstaking...

It doesn’t come naturally to me to relinquish control. The key thing is to instil your ethics into other people, then give them the freedom to go out and do their job. You need to make a structure in the business to allow them to do that.

Our structure is to support and mentor each other, and that includes me too. We communicate a lot...

You can’t be too precious about things, saying that’s not the way you would have done it. If the company’s going to grow, you have to delegate and allow people the space to get on with it, obviously having got the right people on board with you.

When you first start, the business is your baby and it’s very hard to let go and let other staff do the job. But I’ve learnt over the years that that’s what you’ve got to do because there are some really talented people out there. Also, if you keep doing everything yourself, you become your own worst enemy.

When you’re first starting out in business, you can’t delegate anything. You’ve got to understand the pain and problems, the opportunity, the responsibility, how you’re going to achieve your objectives. It’s all a big learning curve, and you need to understand it all and work with it.

When the work gets too much, employ someone to help....
